“In fact, one of his coaches pulled me aside and said, ‘We’re about to teach this kid a boxing lesson. Watch what we’re going to do’. He couldn’t be more comfortable.”

Silva faked a leg kick and has pulled out a few tricks to try distract and frustrate Paul early in their blockbuster bout.

The first round, as expected, opened with both fighters feeling each other out although Silva was not throwing much at all.

Paul, meanwhile, started to jab towards the body, although it was Silva who landed the best punch of the round.

In the end Paul was the more active fighter of the two in the first. But Helwani got the sense that Silva’s largely quiet opening could start to get to the YouTube sensation-turned boxer.

“Anderson is a great counter-striker so he wants Jake to get frustrated and then pop him,” Helwani said in commentary.

Helwani called Silva a “master of mind games” and those mind games continued in the second round as he upped the physicality and gamesmanship.

“He can’t mess around, not at his age,” warned Helwani.

“It seems like he doesn’t respect Jake’s power at all and I’m getting the sense Jake is getting frustrated.”

Mauro Ranallo described it as effective “showboating” from Silva, who even faked a leg kick at one point to try and feint Paul and finished the round the better of the two.

Paul did almost land a huge right hand though, further highlighting Helwani’s earlier warning that Silva needed to be careful not to leave himself open too much.

Paul stepped up his game to get more aggressive in the third, although Silva hit back with a straight right hand and combination as his hand speed caused plenty of problems.

There was plenty of pace early in the round from Silva, although Paul did well to adjust as the round progressed and land a few strong punches of his own in another close round.

One of Silva’s coaches had warned pre-fight that the UFC legend was ready to teach Paul a boxing lesson. And he certainly was living up to the billing as his greatest test yet.

Silva was picking his time to up the aggression before then toning down his activity to preserve his energy while tiring out and frustrating Paul.
